About Pashmina

WHAT IS A REAL PASHMINA SHAWL?

The Pashmina yarn is made from the fleece of the 'capra hircus' goat that lives high in the Himalayas. The fibre produced by this animal is the very finest and softest cashmere.

The true Pashmina is hand-woven with no additional fibres such as silk or cotton. The yarn from which it is woven is also hand spun.

The Kashmiri artisans use traditional techniques of weaving and embroidering that date back centuries and are passed down over generations.

The production time of a single shawl takes approximately 5 weeks. Hand embroidered pieces take longer and depending on the density of the embroidery, it can take up to 1 and 5 years to finish a single piece.

WHERE DO PASHMINAS COME FROM?

The fleece comes from domesticated goats that live high in the Himalayas.

Both yarn and shawl are produced only in certain villages in Kashmir in Northern India.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CASHMERE AND PASHMINA

There are many grades of cashmere, but pashmina cashmere is the finest, lightest and softest.

"All pashmina is cashmere but not all cashmere is pashmina".

Cashmere and pashmina do come from the same type of goat. However, it is a matter of the fineness of the wool. Pashmina is so fine that it can only be produced (at every stage) by hand and woven by hand.

Pashminas are still handed down as family heirlooms in India today.
